How to Report and Categorize Difficult Cases Utilizing the WHO-IARC-IAC International Systems for Reporting Cytopathology

The International Academy of Cytology has joined with the International Agency for Research into Cancer (IARC), a WHO publishing arm, in developing and publishing four international systems for reporting lung, pancreaticobiliary, lymph node and soft tissue cytopathology. The goals of this project are to improve and standardize the reporting of cytopathology, improve communication between cytopathologists and clinicians, improve patient care, focus on the current role of cytopathology at these sites and highlight areas requiring further research.

This course will present four difficult cytology cases of lung, pancreaticobiliary, lymph node and soft tissue and describe how to approach them using the WHO-IARC-IAC International Systems for Reporting Cytopathology. For each case it will be shown how to report them, diagnostic criteria, risk of malignancy, use of ancillary technique and respective management.

Upon completion of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

  •     Use the WHO-IARC-IAC International Systems for Reporting Cytopathology to handle difficult cases in the daily routine.
  •     Describe the nomenclature systems for reporting lung, pancreatobiliary, soft tissue and lymph node cytology findings.
  •     Discuss the management of each category in the four systems described.
