CASE 1
Pleural fluid cytology revealed microorganisms seen in the cytoplasm of numerous macrophages and neutrophils, creating “negative images” on the DQ preparation. Acid-fast stains demonstrated intracellular acid-fast bacilli consistent with mycobacteria (See image 4 below). Microbiologic studies with DNA probe technology resulted in identification of the mycobacterial organism as Mycobacterium kansasii.
