The International Academy of Cytology (IAC), IAP (Pakistan Division) and Histopathology and Cytology Society of Pakistan held a most exciting educational event – “The Cytopathology Tutorial” on July 14-15, 2023, in Lahore, Pakistan.
Cytopathology as a field has evolved into a frontline clinically-oriented discipline, playing a pivotal role in timely and accurate patient management. Recent years have seen an exponential growth of newer techniques (automation, immunomarkers and molecular testing) being applied to augment morphologic evaluation of cytologic specimens. Additionally, there have been several significant revisions of tumor nomenclature and classifications in Histopathology which directly affects the way the diagnoses of such lesions are rendered in Cytopathology. Several updated “Reporting Systems” have been introduced in Cytopathology. There are new therapeutic approaches personalized for oncologic patients with important implications on cytologic interpretations.

This two-day course brought the world’s leading experts in Cytopathology to Pakistan, in person and virtually, along with distinguished national speakers. The tutorial exposed general pathologists, cytopathologists, pathology trainees and cytotechnologists not only to a comprehensive didactic curriculum but by employing unique ways of faculty-to-attendee interactions offered a truly enriching educational experience. A combination of focused unknown case presentations and high-resolution video microscopy/virtual slide presentations will follow each lecture session. Each afternoon session ended with an hour-long special interactive presentation of truly “challenging cases” with active participation of the attendees.
It is hoped that after the meeting a link can be provided for the registrants to view videos for a limited time.

Dr. Ali serves as Professor of Pathology and Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as the Director of the Division of Cytopathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his Pathology residency training at North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University in New York with fellowships in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Cytopathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Known globally as an innovative educator, Dr. Ali has over 350 invited lectures, keynote speeches and visiting professorships all over the world. In collaboration with international societies and universities, he directs or co-directs several annual major cytopathology tutorials.
Dr. Ali has published extensively with over 320 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals, over 35 books, book chapters and electronic media. Known for his expertise in “Thyroid” and “Pancreatic” cytopathology, his monograph on “The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology” (now in its 3rd edition) has been translated in 8 languages and is extensively used in medical practice all over the world. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology (JASC) and has served as member of the executive board and chair of the scientific program and several other committees of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC). He is a past-President of the ASC, President-elect of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) and chair of the International Board of Cytopathology of the IAC. He is a fellow of both, the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and the IAC. He is recipient of the ASC’s “Warren R. Lang Award” in 1996, “President’s Award” in 2012, “Excellence in Education Award” in 2015, the IAC’s “Maurice Goldblatt Award” in 2019 and Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology’s “LC Tao Educator of the Year Award” in 2022.

Asif Loya, MD, Senior Consultant Pathologist and Medical Director, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore. He is a graduate of Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan (1997). Dr Loya completed his Residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at University of Florida, HSC, Jacksonville in 2004 and subsequently did his Fellowship in Cytopathology (2005) from the same institute. Further, he went on to do a Fellowship in Surgical Pathology (2006) at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. He is a Diplomate of the American board of Anatomic and Cytopathology, and a Fellow of the International Academy of Cytology. Additionally, he has been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) of Pakistan. He is actively involved as a Member of the Faculty of Histopathology, CPSP long with being an examiner and supervisor for the college. Also, he works as a Secretary of the International Academy of Pathology (Pakistan Division) and has served as a Council Member of the Pakistan Medical Commision. He currently Chairs the Board of Governors of Peshawar Institute of Cardiology, Peshawar, Pakistan. Dr Loya has more than 70 publications in peer reviewed pubmed indexed journals and is an author of a book, and book chapter. He has quite a few local and international research grants to his credit.

Dr. Baloch received his medical degree from Liaquat Medical University in Sind, Pakistan. After receiving his PhD in 1991 he joined the pathology residency at Hahnemann University Hospital. This was followed by fellowships in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York and cytopathology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia. Dr. Baloch began his career as an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at UPENN medical center in1997 and is currently a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine there. He has authored more than 200 peer reviewed publications in leading pathology journals on the subject of endocrine and head and neck pathology; and book chapters and monographs. Dr. Baloch has delivered numerous lectures, workshops and short courses both at the national and international meetings including ASC, USCAP, ASCP, CAP, ECC and IAP. Dr. Baloch has co-authored 3 books and has served as co-editor of the most recent ?Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology?. Dr. Baloch has also served as the chair of the terminology and morphologic criteria committee of the 2007 NCI sponsored thyroid FNA initiative which led to the development of ?Bethesda Thyroid FNA Classification Scheme?. Dr. Baloch also served on the international panel which recommended the renaming of encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma to non-invasive follicular tumor with papillary like nuclear features (NIFTP). Dr. Baloch is executive editor of Diagnostic Cytopathology and member of the editorial board of Cancer Cytopathology, Cytojournal, Endocrine Pathology and Journal of American Society of Cytopathology.
Dr. Baloch has served as the chair of ASCP and ASC annual meeting scientific program committee, member of USCAP education committee, ASC executive board, ASCP committee for continuing professional development, Papanicolaou Society scientific program committee, American Association of Endocrinologist thyroid nodule guideline task force and American Thyroid Association laboratory test committee.

Dr. Momin T. Siddiqui is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill-Cornell in New York. He currently, also serves as the Medical Director of the Papanicolaou Cytopathology Laboratory at Cornell and directing the cytopathology fellowship there as well.
Dr. Siddiqui is currently serving as the President-Elect of the American Society of Cytopathology. He has also served on numerous national and international pathology organizational executive boards and committees in the last two decades. In addition, he has represented and advocated for the cytopathology community/interests by serving on various committee assignments with the American Board of Pathology, Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology and the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
Dr Siddiqui’s professional career has been focused on education, teaching and research. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and co-authored books as well as book chapters. His current research interests include validation and usage of molecular and immunocytochemical markers in cytologic samples and digitization of cytologic specimens. Dr Siddiqui is also a member of numerous editorial boards/editorships, including the Journal of American Society of Cytopathology, Acta Cytologica, Diagnostic Cytopathology, Cancer Cytopathology and Cytopathology. He has also been recognized for teaching workshops and giving lectures internationally.

Dr Shahid Pervez is a Professor & Senior Consultant Histopathologist at AKUH. His major diagnostic and research interests include Breast Pathology, Neoplastic Hematopathology and Predictive Pathology. He has supervised several FCPS & PhD students and published extensively with over 230 research publications, several book chapters. He is also Editor of ‘Atlas of Diagnostic & Predictive Histopathology’, the 2nd edition of which is published by ‘Springer’ in 2020. He has served in various leadership positions and was elected ‘Councillor’ of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP)’ and ‘Editor’ of CPSP official journal (JCPSP) having an impact factor of over 1. He is also ‘Country Advisor & Senior Examiner of Royal College of Pathologists, UK’. He played a pivotal role in establishing vibrant and active Pathology forums and is the Founder President of ‘IAP-Pakistan Division’, ‘Histopathology & Cytology Society of Pakistan (HCSP)’ & ‘SAARC Academy of Cytology & Histopathology (SACH)’. Dr Pervez also played a pivotal role in reviving ‘Karachi Cancer Registry (KCR)’ and is the ‘Chair of KCR’ and ‘Vice Chair of National Steering Committee for Cancer Registry’.
