Azat Shibanova 2019

Professor Azat Shibanova 2019 after receiving the "Respect Award"

Professor Azat I. Shibanova, MD, a member of the International Academy of Cytology for almost 30 years, Honorary President of Kazakhstan Association of Clinical Cytologists, veteran of Kazakhstan Oncological Service, passed away on January 7, 2021 in Almaty, Kazakhstan at age 87. Professor Shibanova was tireless in her efforts to establish Clinical Cytology as a discipline in the Republic of Kazakhstan. She sought and estabIished early on the contact with the International Academy of Cytology (IAC), participated at the Tutorials of Cytology in Vienna in the 1980´s upon invitation of Dr. GL Wied and served as National Editor for ACTA CYTOLOGICA for many years. Upon her initiative the Association of Clinical Cytologists of Kazakhstan was created in 1993 and affiliated with the IAC.
Azat Shibanova was born into the family of the well-known orientalist, diplomat, journalist and teacher, political and public figure Ilyas Akhmetov, who contributed significantly to development and preservation of the Kazakh language and culture. She continued the family tradition and dedicated herself to medical science. She graduated in 1960 from the State Medical Institute in Almaty and was invited to work for a newly founded Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Oncology & Radiology. She participated in establishing a Tumor Cytology Laboratory, which she then lead for more than half of a century. She initiated a national cervix cancer screening program in Kazakhstan by opening centralised clinical labs in all regional oncology centers operating successfully up to date.
Throughout her busy life she was supported by her family, first of all by her husband Bulat Ergazievich Abdrakhimov, who organized the healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan and headed the anticancer control department of the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Oncology & Radiology for more than 20 years and her daughter Gaukhar.
All members of the Executive Council and the entire membership of the IAC pay tribute to this great woman and express their feelings of loss and sadness. Many of us could enjoy the company of this wonderful and caring woman 3 years ago as she hosted the successful Tutorial of Cytology in September 2017 in Almaty.
Azat will be sorely missed.
