IAC Webinar 22. January 2026

Updates in Pediatric Thyroid Cytology

Vivian Weiss, MD, Ph.D, MIAC

Department of Pathology and Molecular Pathology
Vanderbilt University Medical Center,
Nashville, Tennessee, USA

We will review current updates in pediatric thyroid cytology and discuss challenging thyroid lesions in children.

The prevalence of pediatric thyroid nodules and cancer has significantly increased in the last decade. As such, there are increasing numbers of pediatric thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsies that require interpretation by cytologists and cytopathologists in our laboratories. Importantly, thyroid disease in children is unique from that in adults and has distinct genetic drivers. However, diagnosticians must often use adult-focused guidelines for interpreting radiology, cytology, and molecular testing to provide care for children with a distinct pediatric disease. The focus of this lecture will be on the unique considerations for pediatric thyroid cytology. In addition, we will focus on the value of a team approach to interpret the radiology, pathology, and molecular testing unique to pediatric thyroid nodules.

Dr. Weiss is board certified in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology, and Cytopathology. Dr. Weiss leads a federally funded research laboratory studying the pathogenesis of pediatric and adult thyroid cancer. Dr. Weiss’s laboratory has developed primary-patient thyroid cancer organoids (Vilgelm et al., iScience). She has also explored the molecular and immunologic drivers of adult and pediatric thyroid carcinoma (Xu et al., Cell Genomics; Gallant et al., JAMA Oncology). Dr. Weiss is on the editorial board for three cytology journals. She also previously served as Chair for the Lab Services Committee of the ATA and Chair for the Product Innovation Committee of the ASC.
