About the Speakers

Prof. Poonam Vohra, MD

Dr. Poonam Vohra is a Professor of Pathology at the University of California, San Francisco and Director of the Breast Pathology Fellowship. She serves on the Executive Board and is the chair of the social media committee of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology, and the Editorial Boards of Cancer Cytopathology, JASC and co-chair ofSocial Media Associate Editors in Diagnostic Cytopathology.

A recognized leader in interventional cytopathology, Dr. Vohra has taught at the ultrasound-guided FNA biopsy workshops at the ASC annual meeting since 2016 for nearly a decade. She has also delivered multiple international lectures and courses on the evolving role of pathologists in interventional cytology, including at the International Congress of Cytology (Florence 2025).

She is a three-time recipient of the American Society of Cytopathology Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Research Award (2022–2024). Her academic interests include interventional cytology, genitourinary cytology, AI-driven applications in urine cytology, and breast pathology.

Prof. Ronald Balassanian, MD

He is a Professor of Pathology and Program Director for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residency Training Program, and as Medical Director of Cytology and the Fine Needle Aspiration Clinic. He has led the ultrasound guided FNA biopsy workshops at the American Society of Cytopathology Annual Scientific Meeting since 2011 and has conducted FNA courses around the world, reaching underserved communities in low resource settings including Tanzania, Peru, and Ethiopia. His areas of interest include breast FNA biopsy, applied molecular diagnostics in cytology, and patient communication. He is a graduate of University of Vermont Larner College Medicine, and completed residency training in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Fellowship training Cytopathology at UCSF. He has long been an advocate for patient centered communication and minimally invasive diagnostic cytopathology.
