What to expect
Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure essential for evaluating lesions in multiple organ sites. This immersive diploma course and hands-on workshop provides comprehensive training in both direct (digital palpation-guided) FNA and ultrasound-guided FNA, integrating the following:
- Didactic lectures
- Case discussions
- Simulation exercises
- Supervised hands-on practice
Participants will develop practical skills in
- Needle placement
- Ultrasound targeting
- Smear preparation
- Specimen handling
- Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE)
Digital pathology with whole-slide image (WSI) exercises reinforces diagnostic accuracy and technique.
Language
This course is held in English.
Instructors will also provide additional support in Spanish.

Dr. Eduardo Alcaraz-Mateos, Md, PhD, MIAC
Pathologist and cytopathologist at the Morales Meseguer University Hospital (Murcia, Spain), and adjunct professor of Medicine, University of Murcia. Inventor of the FioNA fine-needle aspiration simulator, creator of the SimInPath mobile application for assessing competencies in Pathology, and organizer of fine needle aspiration workshops by palpation and ultrasound-guided worldwide.
Prof. Maria D. Lozano Escario, Md, Miac
Dr. Lozano is co-director of the Department of Pathology and Head of the Cytopathology Area at the University Clinic of Navarra and professor of Pathology at the University of Navarra. As a researcher, she is a Principal Investigator and is part of multidisciplinary teams within the university, as well as at national and international level.
Fuensanta Caballero Alemán
Fuesanta is a Registered Nurse and Technician in Pathology and Cytodiagnosis. She works at the Department of Internal Medicine, Morales Meseguer University Hospital in Murcia, Spain. She collaborates with the University of Murcia and the Catholic University of San Antonio of Murcia as an associate tutor, teaching nursing students during their clinical internships. As a facilitator, she has been part at FNA workshops in Europe and the Americas.
