The course will highlight how practice management for preoperative diagnosis for solid pancreatic tumors has continued to evolve. It will highlight the role of pathologists , especially cytopathologists in this changing paradigm. The presentation will highlight an algorithmic approach to diagnosis of select solid pancreatic tumors, differential diagnosis and judicious use ancillary studies. The presentation will also highlight how preoperative EUS guided small tissue samples can lead to personalized and comprehensive cancer care.

Dr. Nirag Jhala serves as Chief of Oncologic Pathology at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Professor and Vice Chair clinical operations for Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and University Hospital. Prior to joining Rutgers, Dr. Jhala also served as Director of organ pathology and special services at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Director Cytopathology for PCAM at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Director Division of Anatomic Pathology for Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia.

Dr. Jhala completed his medical training from Smt. NHL Mun Medical College, India followed by specialty board in Pathology and Bacteriology from BJ Medical College, (Gujarat University), India . He is also certified in Anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology. He has trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University. Furthermore, he has completed specialized training in GI, Pancreatic and Hepatobiliary pathology at the Baylor College of Medicine and Methodist Hospital , Houston, TX . In addition, he has trained at the AFIP, Washington DC.
He has provided seminal contributions in the development of EUS and EBUS guided FNA and FNB and was invited by Early detection Research Network (NCI) for his work on biomarkers in pancreatic cancer to contribute to the first white paper on biomarkers for pancreatic carcinoma. He also worked with colleagues on writing recommendations from Papanicolaou society of cytology for ancillary testing for Pancreatic tumors and has served as contributor for morphologic features for pancreatic carcinoma for the inaugural volume of WHO Pancreaticobiliary cytology. He serves as a member of the expert editorial board for WHO-IARC book on upcoming inaugural volume of liver cytopathology. He has contributed over 300 articles, book chapters and presentations. He continues to be invited by national societies to develop EUS and EBUS guided tissue acquisition processes. He has received several awards including Fullbright award from Endo sonographers/gastroenterologists for his contributions to the field of Endoscopic Ultrasound Guided tissue acquisitions.
