Aims of the Committee

Update and monitor the cytopathology board examination offered for fellowship.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform an annual review and audit of the pool of questions and rewrite/delete flawed questions.
  • Re-format of questions to ensure compliance with current concepts
  • Increase the question pool by approximately 50 questions per year.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of exams by evaluating exam metrics.
  • Collaborate with the Education Committee and CT Affairs Committee.

Chair

Dr. Syed, Z. Ali

Dr. Syed Z. Ali, MD, FRCPath, FIAC (USA)

Prof. Ali serves as Professor of Pathology and Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as the Director of the Division of Cytopathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his Pathology residency training at North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University in New York with fellowships in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Cytopathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Known globally as an innovative educator, Prof. Ali has well over 375 invited lectures, keynote speeches and visiting professorships all over the world. In collaboration with international societies and universities, he directs or co-directs several annual major cytopathology tutorials.

Prof. Ali has published extensively with over 335 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals, over 35 books, book chapters and electronic media. Known for his expertise in “Thyroid” and “Pancreatic” cytopathology, his monograph on “The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology” (now in its 3rd edition) has been translated in 8 languages and is extensively used in medical practice all over the world. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology (JASC) and a past-President of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC). Presently, he serves as the President of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) and Chair of the International Board of Cytopathology of the IAC. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and the IAC. He is recipient of the ASC’s “Warren R. Lang Award” in 1996, “President’s Award” in 2012, “Excellence in Education Award” in 2015, the IAC’s “Maurice Goldblatt Award” in 2019, Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology’s “LC Tao Educator of the Year Award” in 2022 and the ASC’s “Papanicolaou Award” in 2023.

Dr. Marcia Abbott

Dr. Marcia Abbott, MD, FIAC (Canada)

Dr. Abbott is the Medical Lead for Cytopathology in Calgary, Canada (high volume urban lab) and a General Pathologist/Cytopathologist in Red Deer, Canada (rural hospital). Prior employment as a cytotechnologist and medical school, general pathology residency and Area of Focused Competence in Cytology (fellowship) were completed in Calgary. She is the current President for the Alberta Medical Association Section of Laboratory Physicians. She also chairs various local and national educational and leadership committees and is heavily involved in resident teaching, including weekly cytology rounds, research projects, academic advisor, and lecturer.


Deepali Jain, MD, FIAC, FRCpath

Deepali Jain, MD, FIAC, (India)

Dr. Deepali Jain is Professor Department of Pathology, Thoracic Center of Excellence,
at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC), Pittsburgh, PA, USA. She also
holds the position of Professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),
New Delhi, India. Her primary areas of expertise include thoracic pathology, with a focus
on lung cancer and thymic neoplasms, as well as cytopathology and sinonasal
malignancies. Dr Jain serves pathology and education committees of International
Association for Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). Dr. Jain has authored and coauthored
over 380 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters. She is Editorial Board
member of upcoming World Health Organization (WHO) classification of Thoracic
Tumors. She also served editorial board of 2021 WHO classification of Thoracic Tumors
and 2022 WHO-IAC International System for Reporting Lung Cytopathology. She has
contributed chapters to several WHO classification volumes including Thoracic Tumors,
Head Neck tumors, Endocrine and Neuroendocrine tumors, WHO Cytopathology
Classification system for Lung, Soft tissues, and Head Neck. She has edited two books:
Atlas of Thymic Pathology and Atlas of Sinonasal Tract Pathology. She is a recipient of
numerous distinguished national and international scientific awards including IASLC
Mary J Matthews Pathology/Translational research award.

Dr. Asif Loya, MD, FIAC (Pakistan)

Dr. Asif Loya, MD is a Senior Consultant Pathologist and Medical Director at Shaukat Khanum Memorial cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore. He has more than nineteen years of experience running on of the largest laboratory networks in Pakistan, and managing affairs of the medical division of the only dedicated cancer hospital in the country.


Donna K. Russell, Med, CFIAC

Donna Russel, CFIAC (USA)

Donna Russell received her Master’s in Education from the University of Rochester Graduate School of Education and currently is the Education Coordinator of the Cytopathology Resident/Fellowship training program at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York. She has been an employee at UR Medicine for over 30 years.  She is also the program director of the Master’s level Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center/Daemen College School of Cytotechnology and is currently teaching her seventh class.
