
Aims of the Committee
Provide cutting-edge continuing education in the field of cytopathology. Explore new and innovative educational tools. Plan the scientific content for tutorials, seminars and related activities.
Responsibilities
- Organize 2-day mini tutorials in collaboration with regional/national societies
- Arrange IAC companion meetings at national and international conferences
- Strategize and represent the IAC in developing the scientific program of the ICC 2028 in Korea
- Liaise with the webinar and e-learning committee on educational activities and selection of speakers
- Ensure compliance with the requirements of all accreditation agencies.
Co-Chairs

Dr. Philippe Vielh, MD, PhD, FIAC (France)
Dr. Philippe Vielh directed the cytopathology unit at Institut Curie (Paris, France) for 13 years before moving to Gustave Roussy comprehensive cancer center (Villejuif, France) where he headed the cytopathology unit (2003-2015), the histocytopathology unit of the transnational research laboratory (2007-2014), and the institutional biobank (2011-2014). He then worked (2015-2019) at the Laboratoire National de Santé (Dudelange, Luxembourg) where he was mainly in charge of cytopathology. He is now working at Medipath and the American Hospital of Paris (France).

Dr. Esperanza Teuzaba Torres, MIAC (Colombia)
Dr. Esperanza Teuzaba Torres is the scientific director of Patolab laboratory, Clinica de la Mujer, Bogota, where practices and training for cytology students take place. Also currently working in the Cervical Cancer Agreement Group, developing guidelines, outlines, and efforts to reduce the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer in Colombia. She also collaborates, as a member of SLAC, with the development and improvement of Cytology in Latin America, with continuing education.

Dr. Gary Tse, MIAC (Hong kong)
Dr. Gary Tse is a professor in the Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology, Prince of Wales Hospital and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the vice president for Asia for IAP, and the president of the Hong Kong Division of International Academy of Pathology. Dr. Tse has given many invited presentations, convened regional and international meetings and has published actively in breast pathology, and has published extensively.

Dr. Dina Mody, MD, FIAC (USA)
Dr. Mody is the medical director of the systemwide cytopathology laboratory at Houston’s Methodist Hospital and was the Cytopathology Fellowship program director till June 2017. She is professor of Pathology and laboratory medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and adjunct professor at Texas A&M University. She was also the medical director of Bioreference/GenPath cytology lab in Texas for 12 years till July 2022
She is a past president of American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) and has been a member of the executive board of the ASC. She has received the Papanicolaou Award, the President’s Award and Excellence in Education award from that society.

Dr. Angela P. Y. Chong, MD, MIAC (Singapore)
Dr. Angela P. Y. Chong, MD worked in various hospitals both in Singapore and in Australia. Most recently she was the founding Head, Department of Pathology, Sengkang General Hospital from 2015 to 2020 and retired from full time service in 2021. She is now a visiting consultant at Sengkang General Hospital, at KK Women and Children’s Hospital and at IHH/Parkway Laboratories.
She is also the founding president of the Society of Cytology, Singapore which is affiliated to the IAC; and the founding president of the Association of Pathologists, Singapore which is also serves as the Singapore Division of the IAP . She is passionate about promoting the exchange of knowledge in pathology and is active in organising seminars in SE Asia

dr. Syed Z. Ali, MD, FRCPath, FIAC (USA)
Prof. Ali serves as Professor of Pathology and Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as the Director of the Division of Cytopathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his Pathology residency training at North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University in New York with fellowships in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Cytopathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Known globally as an innovative educator, Prof. Ali has well over 375 invited lectures, keynote speeches and visiting professorships all over the world. In collaboration with international societies and universities, he directs or co-directs several annual major cytopathology tutorials.
Prof. Ali has published extensively with over 335 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals, over 35 books, book chapters and electronic media. Known for his expertise in “Thyroid” and “Pancreatic” cytopathology, his monograph on “The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology” (now in its 3rd edition) has been translated in 8 languages and is extensively used in medical practice all over the world. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology (JASC) and a past-President of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC). Presently, he serves as the President of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) and Chair of the International Board of Cytopathology of the IAC. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and the IAC. He is recipient of the ASC’s “Warren R. Lang Award” in 1996, “President’s Award” in 2012, “Excellence in Education Award” in 2015, the IAC’s “Maurice Goldblatt Award” in 2019, Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology’s “LC Tao Educator of the Year Award” in 2022 and the ASC’s “Papanicolaou Award” in 2023.

Massimo Bongiovanni, MD, FIAC (Switzerland)
Dr. Bongiovanni is head of Cytopathology at SYNLAB Pathology in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is member of the Pathology Expert Group, at SYNLAB International, Member (MIAC) and then Fellow (FIAC) of the International Academy of Cytology since 2016. He is the author of more than 200 scientific articles and 15 book chapters. He was Vice President of the Swiss Cytology Society (2015-2021) and a member of the Endocrine Tumor Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He is associate editor of the journal Acta Cytologica and participates in the editorial board of the journal Diagnostic Cytopathology. He is currently co-chair of the scientific committee of the European Federation of Cytology Societies (EFCS).
