Candidates proposed for the IAC Executive Council for the years 2010-2013.
All voting members of the IAC will receive a ballot (voting form) together with the 2010 annual dues statement. The signed form should be returned to the Office of the Secretary-General by April 1, 2010 in order for your vote to be counted. The new Executive Council will be installed during the 17th International Congress in Edinburgh, May 2010.

President Diane Solomon, U.S.A. Diane Solomon, M.D. is a Senior Investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Washington, USA. Currently, Dr. Solomon is working with a team conducting an NCI sponsored clinical trial of a prophylactic HPV vaccine in Costa Rica. She previously headed the NCI ALTS clinical trial with over 5,000 women to determine the optimal management of equivocal and mildly abnormal Pap tests. The results of ALTS have formed the basis for consensus guidelines for management of women with abnormal cytology results and have changed national practice patterns. She has also been instrumental in the development and evolution of the Bethesda System for communicating the results of cervical cytology, and in the development of screening guidelines. Dr. Solomon's research and writings bring a balanced perspective to cervical cancer screening issues, emphasizing the successes and also inherent limitations of the screening process and incorporation of new technologies. She has authored or co-authored over 120 scientific articles, six book chapters, and presented over 250 lectures and workshops, nationally and internationally. |

President-Elect Philippe Vielh, France Philippe Vielh has been heading cytopathology at the Institut Curie, Paris for thirteen years, then moved to the Institut de Cancérologie Gustave Roussy, Villejuif near Paris where he is Director of cytopathology since 2003. He graduated as an MD and a board-certified pathologist from the Faculty of Medicine and as a PhD in Immunology from the Institut Pasteur, both in Paris. He is particularly interested in the study of genomics and transcriptomics of breast and thyroid tumours and is author or co-author of more than 190 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 15 chapters and 4 books. He served as President of the French Society of Clinical Cytology (SFCC) for 10 years and organized the 31st European Congress of Cytology in Paris (2005), where he was elected Secretary General of the European Federation of Cytology Societies (2005-present). Philippe is the recipient of the 2007 L.C. Tao "Educator of the Year" award given by the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology. He will chair the 18th IAC congress scheduled in Paris (May 25-29, 2013). |

Past-President (Elected) Alain P. Verhest, Belgium Dr. Verhest was born and still lives in Brussels, Belgium. In 1966 he graduated from the Free University of Brussels and specialized in Cyto and Histopathology in 1971. He attained his PhD in 1981 and became a Fellow of the International Academy of Cytology in 1983. Alain was Head of Histopathology, Cytology & Cytogenetics (1995-2007) at the Institut Jules Bordet, Cancer Institute of the Free University of Brussels (ULB). Professor of Pathology (1982-2007). Retired May 2007. Secretary General of the European Federation of Cytology Societies (2000-2005). President of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) (2007-2010). Vice-President Robert Y. Osamura, Japan Dr. Robert Y. Osamura, MD, FIAC is Professor of Pathology at Tokai University School of Medicine in Tokyo and currently Chairman of the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology(JSCC), the largest national society of cytology worldwide with over 11.000 members. Dr. Osamura graduated from Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, and trained in pathology at University of Colorado Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, USA and completed a Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. His research interests focused on the application of immunohistochemical techniques to diagnostic pathology and cytology leading him lately into the field of molecular pathology & cytology. Currently, he is involved in developing roles for morphology in molecular targeted cancers therapy in the areas of breast cancers, GIST, lung cancers and colo-rectal cancers. He is particularly interested in emphasizing the significance of cytological material as source of good targets for the application of various molecular techniques. Dr. Osamura has been serving as a member of numerous Editorial Boards in cytology and also pathology. Dr. Osamura organized the 47th Annual Meeting of JSCC in Yokohama in 2006 which attracted 4700 attendees. Since 2004 Dr. Osamura has been on the Executive Council of the IAC, serving as Vice President and as a Chair of Constitution and By-Laws Committee. For 2010-2013, as Vice President, he is looking forward to working hard with all of the members of IAC for "global encouragement and interaction in cytological activities" for the best in diagnosis, therapy and prevention of the diseases. |

Secretary-Treasurer Fernando Schmitt, Portugal Dr. Schmitt is Professor of Pathology at the University of Porto, Portugal and serves as Medical Director of the Unit of Pathology at Institute of Pathology and Immunology of Porto University (IPATIMUP). He was born in Brazil in 1959 and received his medical degree in 1983. Fernando served his pathology residency at the Medical Faculty of Botucatu, São Paulo, performed a fellowship in Clinical Cytology at Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm and earned his PhD in Pathology in 1990. After ten years in the University of São Paulo, Fernando moved to Portugal in 1993. He established a research group in breast pathology and a FNA service at IPATIMUP. Dr. Schmitt holds 11 national and international society memberships, including FIAC. Dr. Schmitt has authored more than 300 papers in peer-review journal and 14 book chapters. He serves as Associate Editor of Diagnostic Cytopathology and belongs on the Editorial board for a number of journals. Dr. Schmitt has served on various national and international committees of Pathology and Cytology Societies. Actually, he is member of IAC executive council and President of the EFCS. Dr Schmitt organized the 35th European Congress of Cytology in Lisbon in September 2009. Teaching medical students, research in breast pathology and performing and diagnosing FNA`s are his favorite activities at this moment. |

Editor Marluce Bibbo, U.S.A. Dr Marluce Bibbo is currently the Warren R. Lang Professor of Pathology, department of Pathology, Jefferson Medical College , Philadelphia, PA, USA. Member of many professional societies related to cytopathology and general pathology she served the American Society of Cytopathology and International Academy of Cytology on numerous committees and as President. She is the Editor of the text Comprehensive Cytopathology (1971,1997,2008), author of 370 papers and 70 book chapters on cytopathology and cell image analysis. Since 2004 she is the Editor in Chief of Acta Cytologica. |

Annabelle Farnsworth, Australia Dr. Annabelle Farnsworth is the medical director of Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology (DHM) and the director of the DHM Cytopathology Department, the largest cytology department in Australia reporting on both gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology specimens. She has an ongoing interest in cervical screening, quality assurance in cytology, automation in cervical cytology and medical education. She is currently the Australian Society of Cyology representative on the federal government review panel looking at quality standards in cervical cytology. She has published widely including investigations into automation in cervical cytology. |

Kusum Kapila, Kuwait Dr. Kapila is Professor of Pathology and Head of Cytopathology at the Kuwait University. She completed post graduation residency program in Pathology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) , New Delhi (India) and performed a post doctoral fellowship in Cytopathology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute, New York. She earned her Masters in Medical Education degree from Dundee and is currently the Program Director of the Graduate Studies in Pathology (Masters and Ph.D) at Kuwait University. She serves as Editor and reviewer for several journals. Dr. Kapila was Head of Cytopathology at AIIMS and served as Secretary, Treasurer and Convenor of the Accreditation and Examination Committee of the Indian Academy of Cytologists. She has organized several symposia and workshops and has been a resource person in national and international meetings where she has been the recipient of several awards.Teaching medical students and diagnostic cytopathology are her special interests. |

Bryan K. Knight, South Africa/Australia Dr. Bryan Knight was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and obtained his medical degree at the University of Zimbabwe. He trained in Pathology and obtained a PhD in Cytopathology at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He has practiced in Africa, Canada and Australia. He was a member of the UCT faculty for 20 years and is an external examiner at the University of Stellenbosch. He is a Fellow of the IAC, past president of the SA Society for Clinical Cytology, Associate of the American College of Pathologists, and member of the American Society of Cytopathology, the Papanicolaou Society and the Canadian Society of Cytology. Bryan reviews for Acta Cytologica and Diagnostic Cytopathology. He helped set up " Africa Calls", a teleconference series that delivers 6 lectures annually to 18 academic centres in Africa. He is a passionate advocate for enhancing cytology in developing countries. |

Mercedes Santamaria Martínez, Spain Dr. Mercedes Santamaria has worked as a cytopathologist since 1978, mostly at the Hospital de Navarra in northern Spain, where she is involved in cancer screening cytology and FNA. For over 20 years, she has been active as Vice-President, President, and Chair of international relations in the Spanish Society of Cytology. She has been President of the European Federation of Cytology Societies and maintains strong ties with Latin American societies. Teaching is an essential part of her life and, as well as being associate professor at the University of Navarra, she is a regular organizer of, speaker at, and participant in congresses, meetings and courses. She is advisor to several journals and associate director of "Patología". |

CYTOTECHNOLOGIST MEMBER Shirley Greening, U.S.A. At Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA since 1983, Ms. Greening is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Bioscience Technologies, which conducts BS and MS programs in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology/Cell Sciences and Medical Laboratory Science. Ms. Greening has been Chair of the Cytotechnology Advisory Committee of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC), and is a Past-President of the American Society for Cytotechnology (ASCT). An active member of the IAC since 1972, she is Chair of the IAC's Cytotechnology Awards Jury. With interests in national and international education and practice issues, Ms. Greening is currently serving on the International Advisory Board for King Saud bin Abdulaziz University of Health Sciences in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and is a member of ASCP's International Certification Committee. She received the Cytotechnologist of the Year Award from the ASC in 1993, the Cytotechnologist Achievement Award of the American ASCT in 1995, and the 1997 Cytotechnology Award in Clinical Cytology from the IAC. |
