Case of the Month

by Volker Schneider, MD, FIAC, Pathology Laboratory, Freiburg, Germany

CASE HISTORY:
This 28 year old patient had a conisation of the cervix in an outside hospital 8 weeks ago for CIN 3 , which had been completely removed, the margins of resection were free.  Because of postoperative bleeding the patient was re-admitted 24 hours later. She now presented 2 months later for the first postoperative check-up to her gynecologist. A cervical smear was taken.

fig_2_dec09 Fig 2: At higher magnification  the homogeneous, amorphous nature of the filaments and the lack of an internal structure can be appreciated; in the background a few regular squamous epithelia and leukocytes are present.
fig_4_dec09 Fig 3: Several solitary segments with smooth borders are associated with some solitary  intermediate cells.
