ROSENTHAL, Editors In  view  of  the  crucial  importance  of  maintaining  as  well  as  assuring  quality  in  the  practice  of  cytopathology,  the International Academy of Cytology, via its Committee on Continuing Education and Quality Assurance, invited international experts to participate in  a  collection  of  articles  dealing  with  quality  assurance,  quality  controls,  workload  limitations  and proficiency testing. Aside from the various chapters in this Compendium dealing with specific topics of quality assurance, the reader also will find a compilation of pertinent literature and two symposia on the subject, one from the year 1988 and the other conducted just recentlym to demonstrate how our views on quality assurance may have changed.  It becomes evident that our preeminent goal was, is and will be to provide frequent and careful screening, competent  diagnostic  evaluation  by  not  overworked,  well  trained  cytotechnologists,  interpreted  by  astute  and  competent  cytopathologists,  using universally acceptable reporting systems of cell findings on well prepared, well fixed and well stained cytologic samples. It is hoped that this Compendium will serve as a guide for present and future endeavors to achieve high quality in the practice of cytopathology.
