RENEWAL and CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

Once a cytotechnologist has earned the CT(IAC) or CT(IAC-GYN) certificate, she/he has the responsibility and obligation to maintain her/his renewal by continuing education in cytology. In order to maintain CT(IAC) or CT(IAC-GYN) registration 180 credits of continuing education are required for each 4-year period from the date of the initial examination. Participation in the continuing education program is mandatory for those CT(IAC) or CT(IAC-GYN) registrants who wish to maintain their CT(IAC) or CT(IAC-GYN) registration and to write the designation CT(IAC) or CT(IAC-GYN) following their name.

Please note that renewal credits only can be given for educational activities that have taken place within each four-year period immediately prior to the renewal due date. Continuing education credits cannot be given for activities prior to taking the examination.

Category 1: Employment in cytology
Maximum number of credits that can be earned in Category 1        100

Category 2: Educational activities
Maximum number of credits that can be earned in Category 2        140

Category 3: Cytotechnology teaching
Maximum number of credits that can be earned in Category 3        60

Category 4: Papers and publications
Maximum number of credits that can be earned in Category 4        80

Category 5: Research in cytology
Maximum number of credits that can be earned in Category 5        40

The renewal due date is announced by mail from the Registrar’s office approximately 2-3 months in advance of the due date. There is no renewal fee for Cytotechnologist Members (CMIAC). For nonmembers, there is a non-refundable renewal fee of US$15 drawn on a US bank.

Once the candidate has passed the comprehensive cytotechnology examination of the International Academy of Cytology she/he may apply for membership in the Academy.

If you took the IAC examination in 2005 or renewed for the 2005-2008 period you are due to renew December 31, 2008.

CMIAC

Membership in the International Academy of Cytology is open to all CT(IAC)s who successfully pass the comprehensive cytotechnology examination and maintain their certificate.

Application forms for CMIAC membership and annual dues information may be obtained from the Office of the Secretary-General in Freiburg, Germany.

Benefits of Cytotechnologist Membership:

CMIACs receive the journal ACTA CYTOLOGICA and the Newsletter of the IAC.
CMIACs are not required to pay a renewal fee for each 4-year period.

After five years of membership, elevation to Cytotechnologist Fellow of the International Academy of Cytology (CFIAC) may be possible. Application forms, prerequisites, and annual dues information for CFIAC membership may be obtained from the Office of the Secretary-General in Freiburg, Germany.

Benefits of Cytotechnology Fellow Membership:

CFIACs have the right to vote in the business meetings of the IAC.
CFIACs receive two journals:
      ACTA CYTOLOGICA and
      ANALYTICAL AND QUANTITATIVE CYTO LOGY AND HISTOLOGY
      and the Newsletter of the IAC.

CFIACs automatically receive a renewal sticker for each 4-year period from the Office of the Registrar.
