HOW TO JOIN
BENEFITS:
Membership in the International Academy of Cytology recognizes particular interest and expertise in the field of cytology and can be demonstrated by using the initials of the particular membership type following the members name. Members also regularly receive copies of the leading journal of cytopathology, Acta Cytologica, 6 times a year at no cost. Similarly, they may obtain copies of Analytical and Quantitative Histology and Cytology and the newsletter of the IAC, CytoPaths. Reduced registration rate at events organized by the IAC, e.g. the International Congress of Cytology, are available. There is access to the teaching resources of the IAC and members also have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the Academy by serving on the various committees of the IAC.
MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES:
The International Academy of Cytology (IAC) welcomes applications
for membership by physicians and cytotechnologists. Nonmedical professionals
working in cytology are likewise welcome to join. The IAC recognizes the following
categories:
1. Medical membership (M.I.A.C.)
2. Medical fellowship (F.I.A.C.)
3. Cytotechnologist membership (C.M.I.A.C.)
4. Cytotechnologist fellowship (C.F.I.A.C.)
5. Professional membership (P.M.I.A.C.)
In addition, particularly meritorious individuals may receive an honorary fellowship (F.I.A.C.[hon]). After retirement all membership categories qualify for emeritus status (em). For more information, see the section on membership in the Constitution and Bylaws.
Physicians
Requirements for medical membership are a medical degree, a completed education in a medical specialty (e.g., pathology, gynecology) in the country of residence, and special education and expertise in cytology. In addition, two letters of recommendation and two sponsors (members or fellows of the IAC) are required. Applications are processed by the Membership Committee.

After two years of membership in the IAC, applicants are eligible to sit for the International Board of Cytopathology, a comprehensive examination in all aspects of cytology. Passing the board examination members automatically elevates members to fellowship status.

Cytotechnologists
Cytotechnologists have to pass the examination of the Cytotechnology Registry of the IAC, which is given six to eight times per year around the world, before applying for membership. Please refer to the Registry web page for further information.
